چکیده

This paper proposes an isolation layer – a shim – between inter-domain routing and packet forwarding. The job of this layer is to coordinate between Autonomous Systems (AS’s) on when and how to modify the forwarding state to ensure interdomain routing loops do not cause forwarding loops. The benefits of a consistency layer are twofold. First, it prevents the creation of transient inter-domain forwarding loops and the resulting packet loss, high latency, and connection failures. Second, by taking the burden of forwarding consistency off the interdomain routing protocol, it enables inter-domain routing protocols with more complex convergence characteristics than BGP, such as protocols that optimize route selection based on performance. We offer two possible designs for the consistency layer. We prove that both designs are free of forwarding loops and show they are easy to deploy in the current Internet.

Inter-domain dynamic routing in multi-layer optical transport networks

Next-generation optical transport networks will automatically and dynamically provision end-to-end connections. In this paper, we study the problem of inter-domain dynamic routing under a multi-layer multi-domain network model, which allows the end-to-end connections to be set up not only across multiple routing domains but also through two transport layers: the optical layer and the digital la...

Survey of Overlay Multicast Technology

IP Multicast is a technique that can transmit one copy of data traffic to multiple receivers at one time. Because it can greatly save the network bandwidth consumption as well as many applications are inherently multicast-based, it has been a research focus since the idea was proposed. However, because of many reasons, such as management, security, inter-domain routing, etc, it has not been wide...

Multi-domain optical routing: Is there life beyond extending BGP?

The design of new inter-domain optical routing protocols may start from scratch, or on the contrary exploit all the research already developed in IP networks with the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). Even though the network premises under which BGP was conceived have drastically changed, the pervasive deployment of BGP makes almost impossible its replacement, hence everything indicates that BGP-b...

An Integrated Network Management Framework for Inter-domain Outbound Traffic Engineering

This paper proposes an integrated network management framework for inter-domain outbound traffic engineering. The framework consists of three functional blocks (monitoring, optimization and implementation) to make the outbound traffic engineering adaptive to network condition changes such as inter-domain traffic demand variation, inter-domain routing changes and link failures. The objective is ...

An Approach to Off-Line Inter-domain QoS-Aware Resource Optimization

Inter-domain traffic engineering is a key issue when QoS-aware resource optimization is concerned. Mapping inter-domain traffic flows into existing service level agreements is, in general, a complex problem, for which some algorithms have recently been proposed in the literature. In this paper a modified version of a multi-objective genetic algorithm is proposed, in order to optimize the utiliz...
